In the sound space of Atem, Sofia Gubaidulina’s highly sensitive and intense music will be interlaced with the chaotic noise of masses of paper in movement.
Three major interpreters - Friedrich Gauwerky (cello), David Nunez (violin), Christophe Delporte (bayan) - will play on stage the composition “Silencio” for cello, violin and bayan and extracts from “Rejoice” for cello and violin. Confronting new sounds with the timelessness of traditional instruments.
Counterpoint of danced movement, the quest for existential humility in the movement of sound will create acute tensions. I imagine the compositions of Sofia Gubaïdulina to be like calligraphic letters emerging from the silence. For this type of writing, the space between the letters is as essential as the letters themselves, as is the silence between the sounds.

Born in Hamburg, the cellist Friedrich Gauwerky made his first public appearance in concert at the age of twelve. His interpretations won him several distinctions and prizes, including that of the Philharmonisch Staatsorchester Hamburg and the Mendelssohn Competition.
He travels worldwide, giving solo recitals, chamber music concerts and playing as a soloist with orchestras.
Contemporary music in its most exploratory forms, including electro-acoustic music, enjoys pride of place in his repertory, alongside baroque, classical and romantic works. He also teaches. (He has given classes at the Cologne Musikhochschule, the Royal Academy of Music, London, the University of California, the University of Adelaide, etc.) and regularly gives master classes in Europe and the United States.
A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Belgium, where he received major distinction diplomas as a soloist with Katalyn Sebestien and Igor Oistrakh; and in chamber music. He also was awarded the master composer diploma by this prestigious institution.
David Nuñez is a Venezuelan who has resided in Brussels since 1991, where he participated in different chamber music groups.
He is a prize-winner of international competitions: for instance “Decouverte Classique 1999 de l¹euroregion” and the “Third Osaka International Chamber Music Competition”.
His orchestra career as a soloist includes presentations with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico, the Symphony Orchestra of Bristol, England, and the most important Symphony Orchestras of Venezuela.
He has lectured on violin for the Venezuela¹s Youth Orchestra Movement, in Santiago de Chile, and as an Assistant Professor at the International Music Course in Morges, Switzerland.
Since 1996, he has participated as a composer and a performer in the Black Jacketts Company contemporary music ensemble, where he has presented some of his music works for the first time and in the “Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles”.%@%
Born in Ath (Belgium) in 1972, he obtains the higher diplomas of accordion and chamber music to the Royal Academy of Mons.
In 1989, he is a prize-winner of the competition “young soloists” (RTBF) and obtains the prize of the televiewers.
He represents Belgium to the tournament “Eurovision of the young musicians”, and plays in finale with the orchestra of the Austrian radio Musikverein in Vienna.
He also obtains the first prize in the competition “young soloists of the regions of Europe” organized in Luxemburg and the 2nd prize in the International Music competition (CIM) organized in Rome.
He participates in concerts as a soloist, with the chamber orchestra of Wallonie or the “Ensemble Musiques nouvelles” and accompanies on stage Annie Cordy, Jean-Marc Thibault and Henri Dès in Belgium, France and Canada.
He is a prize-winner of several international competitions of “chamber music” with his duet of accordion (Bayan) and is the accordionist of the group “Astoria”.
He teaches the accordion in music institutes in Belgium.
